Think about how different our world would be if everyone experienced this. First, to have a personal relationship with Jesus – nothing in this world is more important than that! Then secondly, to live out their purpose in the world. Yes, God created you with a specific purpose. You are here to accomplish something that no one else was created to do. I don’t know about you, but the last thing I want is to get to the end of my life and think to myself “I missed it. God gave me signs, he gave me direction, but I chose a different path”. I want everyone to know the reason they are on this earth and then live it out. That’s a fulfilling, abundant, full life – the exact kind of life Jesus promises!
So how exactly do we do this? There are five purposes of our church that help us achieve our mission. These five purposes are actually commands that were given by Jesus. They are often referred to as the Great Commandment and the Great Commission.
When Jesus was asked “Which is the most important command?” He replied “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind. ’This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.”
Matthew 22:37-40
Jesus gave his disciples and all of us our marching orders right before he ascended into heaven – this is what he said: “Go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you.”
Matthew 28:19-20
Our purpose is to love God and love people. We share the Good News of Christ, welcome people into the family of God, and help each other grow closer to Jesus allowing us to live out our purpose in the church and in the world.
